So you’re looking to watch your first ‘anime’.

Maybe you’re curious about the entertainment medium Gen-Z can’t get enough of, or just seeking something a little different from what you’re used to.

The animated form has conveyed stories on screens around the world for decades. Despite a recent Western surge in popularity thanks to interest from Gen-Z and Millennials, you’ll find hits from the 90s and classics from even before then. It only makes sense that animated shows would become popular as artists have freedom in bringing their stories to life without being hindered by physics or cameras.

I’ve watched many different types of anime over the past two decades . Knowing how vastly different a story can be from another, I try to understand another’s preferences before recommending a show. While many lists online are quite generic, they aren’t tailored to specific interests.

Below, I’m going to recommend some anime based on different interests. Some of the shows I will recommend below are not ‘anime’ as they were not produced in Japan but are still similar enough stylistically or thematically to include.

Straightforward Shonen Battle Anime with a Villain Redemption Arc

Top Pick: Dragon Ball Z
